The Sagittarius Archers hosted the Chad Davis Memorial 3D April 11th and 12th. Chad was a Sagittarius member who won several tournaments at a relatively young age. He got the archery community’s attention when placed in the top 10 at the IBO World Championship when he was only 19. Sadly he lost his life in a helicopter crash at age 25.

There were several notable performances by club members including Cassandra Maron winning the Female 16+ Traditional Other (arrows other than wood) and Haley Lucas taking 3rd in the same class. Jeff Maron took first in the Male 16+ Traditional Wood (wooden arrows) and Ken Davidson took 3rd in Male 16+ Traditional Other. Will Dueck finish a solid 2nd in the Male 16+ Compound Moveable sights category.  It should also be noted the Will finished 4th in the 50+ compound Open at the recent Canadian Indoor 3D Championships held in Cloverdale.

The Chad Davis Memorial is the only outdoor tournament the Sagittarius Archers host. It was a wonderful weekend to be on the 3D trails. The forecasted rain did not occur except for the occasional brief shower. The trees were newly budded out and the foliage emitted the wonderful aroma that we associate with spring. The course was in great shape thanks to Wayne Oulette’s coordinating efforts, and those members who came out and worked on the course. There were several positive comments about the course. Special thanks the Rededok / Renaerts entourage who had most of the targets off the course Sunday while several of us were merely thinking about getting started.

This report would not be complete without mentioning the wonderful food that came out of the kitchen. This is the probably the only amateur archery venue where you can get a homemade lasagna lunch with caesar salad or pulled pork with coleslaw. We also had a pancake breakfast Saturday and Sunday. Thank you to Sue Porter and your family for that.

This was probably the best attended memorial in recent years. We had about 100 archers on the Saturday and over 110 on Sunday. There were a conspicuous number of junior archers as well as adults new to 3D archery which bodes well for the future of our sport. We look forward to increased numbers again next year.
