Last weekend was a busy one for handgun shooters at AFGC with both a Black Badge IPSC course and a visit from world champion steel shooter BJ Norris, here to teach us how to really shoot a Steel Challenge match! Murray Gardner ran a hugely successful weekend of training and has passed on the following report:
This weekend saw my first IPSC Training Course(TC) at the AFGC indoor range. There were 10 keen students who learned the basics needed to get involved with our IPSC handgun shooting sport. Robert Caunt helped me with the group and his knowledge and skill were welcome and appreciated.
Saturday began with my PowerPoint presentation of the course requirements. When we finished that, we began the basic skills lessons to move us to the live fire component. The students brought a variety of guns with the CZ SP01 Shadow being the predominant model. There were a couple of 1911 versions, 9mm Luger and .45 ACP to show that Classic is a valid Division and coming back. Who would have thought the wheel would turn full circle after over 35 years:)
We wrapped around 5pm and came back on Sunday to find a schedule conflict where there were two groups booked into the indoor facility…OOPS! No big. The Western Indoor Pistol League were very accommodating and had their event wrapped and done by the time we finished lunch. Our IPSC group went to R#4 and discovered why I tel students to bring EVERYTHING from suntan lotion to Gortex to the range. Mother Nature was having some fun with us providing everything from sunshine to a hint of hail. The group worked through to lunch after which we went back indoors to wrap up.
By now they were super pumped about the session and took to it with passion. Once the live fire session finished the paper work was wrapped up. Lots of smiles and great memories as they left on their way to joining the rest of our IPSC BC members at the qualifiers coming this 2013 season.
I also want to extend my thanks and appreciation to Tim S for setting this up with the club and working through various stumbles that came along and keeping the equipment going. Also Curtis Y did a yoeman’s job of helping me with club info about lights, equipment, ranges, etc. Special thanks to Rob E for spearheading this from the jump to make it happen.
With that type of help I am anticipating an active year at AFGC doing IPSC TC to bring even more people into our sport.
Next class at AFGC is May04/05.13. For more information, go to
