Red Light & Green Light Explained

Red Light

  • Range Shooting is Active – Eye & ear protection are required for all people on the range, including spectators.
  • You may enter with firearms and equipment and pick your shooting lane.
  • You can uncase your Firearm(s) at the shooting benches only. Be mindful of your muzzle direction.
  • You can load your magazine(s).

Green Light

  • Range Shooting is Not Active – Eye & ear protection may be removed but must be replaced before the RED light is switched on. This is required for all people on the range, including spectators.
  • You MUST NOT TOUCH any firearms. They must be pointed down range & made safe.
  • You may load magazines behind shooting positions on the rear wall tables (not the shooting benches).
  • You may set up or take down targets.

Outdoor Archery Range

  • Open to all members.
  • Crossbows are allowed.
  • Red light / Green light is the same as on gun ranges. Do not handle or uncase bows during green light.
  • There are two types of targets: 1) Field Points 2) Broad Heads – Don’t mix them up! Refer to the signage on the range to identify the difference.

3D Archery Trail System

  • The 3D Archery Trail is always closed except on Wednesday evenings and one Sunday a month.
  • ONLY Sagittarius Sub Club members allowed on the trail.
  • Open hours for 3D Trail available on our website.
  •  When the 3D Archery Trail is open, all gun ranges are closed to usage.

Range Rules

  • Members MUST read Range Rules which are on our website and on each range.
  • Violation(s) of the Range Rules may result in termination of your Club Membership and range privileges.
  • Eye & Ear protection are to be worn by everyone, including spectators, in the shooting areas.
  • If any problems are observed, they must be reported to the Board of Directors or Caretakers immediately.
  • Do not cross the firing line on any ranges. Exceptions can be made for organized groups or when only one person is on the range.

Range Officer

  • Every firing range must have a Range Officer. Usually this is the first person to arrive but this responsibility may be transferred to more experienced persons if desired. It is the RO’s duty to make sure all rules are followed and that everyone responds correctly to the cycling of lights from RED to GREEN to RED.
  • You can pass this off to someone else.

Clubhouse – Indoor Range #1

  • The Indoor Range is not generally available for membership use.
  • It is primarily used by Subclubs (details on our website).
  • Range 1 is never open for shooting unless you are part of the sub clubs renting the facility.

Targets Restrictions

  • No Explosive devices eg: Tannerite, propane tanks, etc.
  • No glass / tiles that create shards.
  • You bring it, shoot it, you clean it up. NO EXCUSES!
  • No shooting AFGC wooden backers with shotguns.
  • Blue barrels on range 3 are not for AFGC member use.

Range 2

  • Range 2 is 100 meters & 100 yards.
  • Firearms allowed are handguns, rifles up to 50BMG & shotguns. Please note that only firearms legal in Canada are allowed in the club.
  • No placing targets on or in front of the trap launcher mound (3 left shooting lanes).
  • There are Bleed Control, AED stations on all ranges. Please bring your own first aid kits in your gun equipment.
  • Clean up everything as you go and after you are finished. Pick up all brass including 22 cal brass and place in the brass recycling can near the exit door.
  • Every range has gas heaters overhead. They can be activated via the 60-minute spring wound countdown timer switch found on the wall.
  • Occasionally the range may be shut down for repairs or maintenance. A blue strobing light will be activated outside the door of the range. No entry is possible.
  • The night lights will come on early in the evening and will light up the entire range. They are switched on by motion sensors. They will only switch off after 30 minutes of no activity in the range.
  • It is important to read the closure calendar on the website front page before driving out. It gives an indication of all ranges that are closed. Clicking on the item will open up a window with more explanation and completion time of that closure. If a range is not listed as closed then you can conclude that it is open for shooting. If today’s date does not even show on the list, then you can conclude that every range is open.
  • On Range 2 you are allowed to place targets on top of the dyke. However, do so by mounting the dyke from the right side by the bridge. Other ranges do not allow you to get to the top of the dykes so targets can only be placed manually in the face of the dyke. Do NOT climb the face of any dykes on any range.
  • Range 2 has metal stand holders already mounted in the ground. They are exactly 100 yards and 100 meters from the shooting line. Wooden target backers can be placed in these stand holders and can remain they when you are finished using them. They do not need to be returned to the shooting shack. However, they must be cleaned of all paper targets. Mobile metal stands can be found next to the shooting shack along with target boards. These will be used to place targets between the shack and the dyke. Both the mobile metal stands and the wooden backers need to be cleaned and returned to their storage area when you are finished with them.
  • Please note the additional safety measures in this range. This is due to the remote targets on the other side of the creek.
  • Note the following items:

    • When you walk through the cut out dyke on the right side of the range, you will pass through a motion detector.
    • That detector will initiate a BLUE flashing light on the wall in the shooting shack and on the sensor just passed through.
    • This activation of the BLUE lights disengages the RED button system and the range lights will stay GREEN thus prohibiting any shooting.
    • Continue walking past the motion detector and assemble/clean up your targets on the other side of the creek.
    • Upon returning from the target area, the last person to return will press the reset button on the motion detector.
    • That last person will continue walking back to the shooting shack and also press the reset button on the BLUE flashing light in that location.
    • This final reset will enable the RED button light again and can be used when everyone is ready to shoot again.
    • Should the BLUE light not go off, then return to the motion detector and once again press the reset button and return again to the shooting shack and press that reset button there as well.
    • Please make sure to never fire any firearm on a green light.
