New Recipients
Elora Hall – Selkirk College (1st Year)
I am extremely honored and grateful to be chosen for AFGC scholarship award. To be part of a club that promotes conservation has been a wonderful experience. I have learned many ways our environment can be conserved and have gained a more rounded view of conservation through AFGC.
This September I will be studying Recreation Fish and Wildlife Technology at Selkirk College. Upon my successful completion of this program, I hope to secure a job in conservation and possibly also complete their Forest Technology program. I am grateful to be chosen for this generous award. With this financial help I will be able to focus more of my time on my studies.
Yuvraj Kahlon – SFU (1st Year)
I am nearing the completion of my 2nd year of studies at SFU’s Beedie School of Business, in which I am pursuing my Bachelor of Business Administration degree. I have experienced an amazing journey at SFU, in which I have received the opportunity to cover a breadth of different courses, participate in a case competition, and connect with wonderful members of the community.
One thing I will always remember is that my experiences from interacting with other AFGC members helped boost my confidence in speaking with others and increased my general socialization skills. These very skills helped me succeed in my first two years at SFU, where I was able to effectively collaborate in all team projects, and become an ideal team leader.
Therefore, I am very thankful to AFGC for allowing me and my family to be part of such a wonderful community, where I have learned so much from my time at the shooting ranges. I am now even more grateful that AFGC has chosen to support my educational journey by helping lower financial pressures, and allow me to smoothly progress with my entrepreneurial vision of opening my own business.
Scholarship Renewals
Lucas Badalucco – UBC (2nd Year)
I would like to begin by once again thanking the AFGC for the amazing opportunity I have been given. This past year has been both challenging and rewarding. I have grown tremendously as an academic, but also an individual, having become more adaptable to stressful or challenging situations as I made the transition to university life. Thanks to the stability that this scholarship has provided me with, I am able to fully immerse myself in my studies and take full advantage of the learning opportunities available to me.
Paige Christensen – UBC (3rd Year)
I just completed my second year at the University of British Columbia, majoring in psychology and minoring in education in the interpersonal development stream. I hope to eventually pursue a Master’s in counselling and work as a counsellor with children and families.
The AFGC’s support has allowed me to focus on my studies full-time and achieve success in my classes. In the fall, I am planning to begin volunteering in a psychology lab to gain research experience. Due to this scholarship, I will be able to give it my full focus alongside my courses. This will help me get into my desired Master’s program, contributing to my future success. I am so grateful to AFGC for making this possible.
In addition to full-time school, I have been volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters and with a local counselling clinic. I am also working as a summer camp manager this summer, which is allowing me to gain valuable experience in my desired field.
I am excited to see what the next half of my degree holds for me and plan to continue working hard towards my goal of becoming a counsellor. Thank you to the AFGC for your ongoing support and this amazing opportunity!
Colette Grenkow – Skilled Trades BC
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the AFGC for supporting my second year in the Metal Fabrication program at BCIT. The scholarship provided valuable assistance in covering the cost of tuition, tools, and transportation, and I am truly grateful for that support.
Since receiving the scholarship, I have continued to work diligently to accumulate the necessary hours toward my apprenticeship. I am pleased to share that I have officially enrolled in Level 3 of the program, which is scheduled to begin in June 2026.
It was a pleasure to see AFGC hosting a shooting match once again following all the recent renovations. I thoroughly enjoyed participating in the event and look forward to future matches and reconnecting with everyone again.
Ricardo Issa – UBC (2nd Year)
I have successfully completed first year university, at the University of British Columbia. In my first year, I faced a major setback after accepting a seemingly friendly invite into a lab-based chemistry course. It turned out to be a very demanding challenge course with weekly test/labs, which caused me to fail Chemistry and be hindered in my other classes in that term. Because of that failed course, it was important for me to take five courses in the second term to achieve second year standing. The course load, although five, was easier and more balanced because I now knew the pace and structure of the courses. I successfully completed all courses and kept pace with the class averages.
Along the way, I made a lot of friends, built lasting memories, and developed emotional and mental endurance. Compared to high school, I learned how to truly learn and how to find the good in tough situations. The support from the AFGC scholarship also helped me greatly to not worry about daily expenses like food and commute fees among other things, and funded the academic tools that immensely improved my learning. Although I faced many roadblocks, my journey through school continues, and what stays is not the hardship faced, but the product of hardship which transformed my work ethic and taught me how to remain strong through negativity and daily troubles.
It is an honour to be one of the Abbotsford Fish and Game Club post-secondary scholarship winners, thank you so much for giving me this unforgettable opportunity.
Sarah Klassen – UVic (4th Year)
This year has been so exciting! I have completed my third year of my sociology degree and am going into my last year. I hope to go into a career in policy making and advising in government and am currently looking at positions within the fisheries sphere. I recently renewed my fishing license as well and have been enjoying the fishing and rock climbing that Victoria has to offer. I am consistently thankful for the support of the Abbotsford Fish and Game club as I begin my final year!
Ashton Morrison – SFU (2nd Year)
I’ve just completed my second year at SFU and will be starting my third year this fall. I’m currently working towards a major in Computing Science.
Over the past year, I had the chance to explore more advanced computing topics like Networking and Artificial Intelligence, which sparked a deeper interest in those areas. Going into my third year, I’m excited to take on more specialized courses in those topics and possibly look into a co-op placement.
Thanks to the support of the AFGC, I’ve been able to focus more on my studies and even pursue interests beyond the classroom, such as game development. I’m very grateful for the opportunities the AFGC has provided, and I look forward to continuing my education with their continued support.
Gabe O’Sullivan – UFV (4th Year)
I have just completed my third year at the University of the Fraser Valley, working toward a Bachelor of Media Arts with a concentration in Film. This year has been especially exciting, as I created short films independently and as part of a creative team, and deepened my understanding of cinematography through hands-on work with both large format and digital photography. I am looking forward to next year when I will be taking on more advanced projects, including documentary film making.
The support from the Abbotsford Fish and Game Club has played a big role in my university studies over the past three years. It has taken the pressure off of covering tuition, which meant I could really focus on my classes without added stress. I am very grateful for the Club’s generosity—it has made a real difference in my education and personal growth!
In my spare time I continue to enjoy mountain biking, watching unique films, exploring with my new digital camera, going fishing and exploring in our boat, and spending time with my friends and family. A heartfelt thank you to the members of the AFGC for helping make my goals a reality. Your support has made a real impact on my journey.
Von Pitzel – UBCO (3rd Year)
I recently completed my second year at UBCO, studying Electrical Engineering. In September, I will begin my third year of the program. This past year has allowed me to dive deeper into my areas of interest as I started to specialize in certain fields.
The AFGC scholarships have helped ease the financial burden of post-secondary education, and I am extremely grateful for the support. Outside of school, I’ve been enjoying what the Okanagan has to offer by exploring the local environment through skiing and hiking.
I’m excited to continue into my third year of study and remain very thankful for the support from AFGC.
Ava Van Santen – TWU (4th Year)
I have now finished my 3rd year at Trinity Western University where I’m majoring in psychology. As part of my degree, I am also completing a Human Services certificate which includes the exciting opportunity to complete three practicum placements. These hands-on experiences will be a valuable part of my learning and growth in the field.
I’m proud to continue representing Trinity Western University as a member of the women’s rugby team. This season I was honoured to be named a Canada West First Team All-Star and TWU women’s rugby Most Valuable Player. Beyond university competition, I took part in RBC Training Ground where I competed alongside over 2000 young athletes from across Canada. I was incredibly excited to be selected as one of the final top 30 athletes and an RBC Future Olympian, bringing me one step closer to my dream of playing rugby at the Olympic level. I also had the amazing opportunity to train with the Senior National Women’s Rugby 7s Team on several occasions as a training partner and was invited to attend their Next Gen training camp for two weeks.
Once again, I had the rewarding opportunity to give back to my community by volunteering as a coach for the senior girls’ rugby team at my former high school. It’s incredibly meaningful to return to a place that shaped me and to now support and inspire the next generation of athletes. Reflecting on the past year, I feel extremely grateful and motivated. Each of these experiences has pushed me to grow not just as an athlete, but as a person. They’ve reminded me of the power of perseverance, the importance of community, and how far passion and hard work can take you.
I wouldn’t have had these amazing opportunities without the generosity of the Abbotsford Fish and Game Club. Receiving the AFGC scholarship has lifted a huge financial weight off my shoulders, giving me the freedom to focus on both my studies and the demanding life of a student athlete. I’m sincerely grateful for the continued support from the Club. It has made a real difference in my journey as I continue to pursue my aspirations.
Congratulations! We wish you all success in your studies and years to come!
